South Sioux City boys claim state soccer championship

It was a 3-2, overtime loss to Elkhorn South in last year’s Class B state title game that put the South Sioux City boys soccer team on the road to redemption. One year later, to complete the state championship journey, that same Storm team stood in the way.

It was scoreless late in the first half, when South Sioux’s Fabian Diaz tapped it ahead and Martin Zamora Pagua finished the job. Zamora Pagua’s goal puts South Sioux up 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, South Sioux’s Michael Virgen got a shot on the free kick and rifled it off the post and in. The second goal of the tournament for Virgen sealed the match.

South Sioux City exacts revenge on Elkhorn South and claims the Class B state championship, 2-0.

"It was all about wanting to get them again," said South Sioux City head coach Lupe Gonzalez. "Some people counted us out, that we weren’t going to make districts, that we weren’t going to get here. We’re here. And look at the outcome. Just like we started right off the season, unfinished business. We took care of business today."

"South Sioux’s always had that fame of playing good games and finishing up short," said senior Leonardo Davalos. "This year, we went with the idea of how the game was going to go. We studied it, and we finished it. We followed the procedures and we won."

"We worked every minute, we played as a team, we played as a family all season," said Zamora Pagua. "It just feels great to finally be a state champion."

South Sioux City finishes 17-5. The Cardinals other state soccer title came in 2013.
