Explorers’ win streak snapped by Wichita

Wichita used a five-run ninth inning to put an end to the Explorers’ 10-game win streak on Sunday, 9-5.

Three Explorer errors set up the inning, and helped the first Wingnut run score. John Nester, Graylin Derke and Nick Rotola had RBI singles.

X’s closer Eric Karch gave up five runs in the inning, but only one was earned. Sioux City committed six errors in the game.

The big ninth inning capped a slow comeback for Wichita. The Wingnuts also scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings, on sacrifice flies by Zach Nehrir and Hunter Clanin.

Earlier in the night, solo home runs from Jose Sermo and Jay Austin had given the Explorers a 2-0 advantage.

Abel Nieves’ two-run home run in the sixth inning tied the game, but Sermo’s two-run single and Dylan Kelly’s sacrifice fly helped the X’s regain a 5-2 lead.

The Explorers and Wichita finish up their series on Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
