Officials: Less oil leaked in Doon train derailment than originally estimated

The amount of oil that leaked from 10 tanker cars following a June derailment near Doon, Iowa, was less than originally estimated.

A spokesperson for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway says 160-thousand gallons of heavy crude oil leaked when the tanker cars derailed early on the morning of June 22nd.

The oil leaked into floodwaters of the nearby Rock River.

But, crews were able to use equipment to contain much of the oil so it wouldn’t make its way downstream.

In all, 33 tanker cars derailed south of Doon, Iowa.

The crash compromised ten of those tanker cars.
