Amputee camp for kids
First day back at summer camp kids start out a little shy a little unsure until they get the chance to show off who they are.
Because first impressions are a big deal.
And you don't want people to get the wrong answer to the important questions.
It's important because the first question these kids usually get asked isn't about their favorite ice cream.
One of the campers Sophie says,"Everyone has something special about them.
The thing that's special about them everywhere else.
One camper says, "The thing special about me is that I have a fake leg."
That's the thing that's normal here.
"you usually don't see people like us outside in the world"
Outside of these walls, people stare.
And here? No one takes a second glance.
While the camp is for kids without limbs and their siblings they don't really talk about that.
Sophie is too busy impersonating a dog and when Dillon isn't preoccupied with the microphone he's dancing.
And Shweta is learning how to play basketball
They know they will go back to the places where people stare and ask them the question that no one cares about here
One camper says,"When they ask me I just mess around with them and say a shark bit it off". Another responds," that's exactly what I say!"
The answer they've all practiced.
Shweta says,"so many people look and stare and so many people ask me this question and like the story oh my gosh so long."
Shweta hopes you can move on to other pressing matters.
"I'm like so what I have a leg nothing else is different. I still like the same pizza!"
The important things like pizza.
Something you might notice - many of the counselors are amputees themselves.
The woman who started this camp had her leg amputated when she was young.it's part of her organization 'living in motion 359' that number was chosen because she decided six couch potato days were enough the rest of them should be spent getting out there and doing stuff.
