Explorers start final homestand with rout of Texas

The Explorers opened their final homestand of the regular season with an 14-0 win over Texas on Wednesday night. Sioux City improves to 68-27 with the victory. The last place Airhogs fell to 25-70.

The X’s scored multiple runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Sioux City put the game away with nine runs in the seventh inning. Nate Samson had five hits, drove in three runs and scored three times. It was Samson’s twelfth game this season with at least three hits, tops in the American Association.

Sioux City starting pitcher Jason Garcia threw a complete game, giving up just two hits while striking out seven.

Game two of the series is Thursday at 7:05 at Mercy Field at Lewis & Clark Park. The series ends on Friday and the X’s finish the regular season with three games in Wichita. Sioux City will be on the road for the first two games of the playoffs, starting September 4.
