SIOUX CITY  (KTIV)- Before the debate on Wednesday night, supporters for both Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Democratic candidate Fred Hubbell gathered outside of Eppley Auditorium to show their support.

Then, once 6:15 p.m. hit, the crowd entered the auditorium.

After a handshake between the two candidates, the debate got underway.

“The first question of tonight’s debate focuses on tax cuts,” says Debate Moderator, Matt Breen.

“When our tax cuts are implemented, almost every single Iowan will see their taxes go down,” said Reynolds. “But I said we’re not done, we’re going to look at tax credits holistically.”

“If we’re gonna have a balanced budget that’s predictable in our state, and we’re gonna actually fund priorities, show me your budget and I’ll show you your priorities,” said Hubbell.

Both candidates also made their viewpoints clear on Medicaid in the state.

“We need to stop having 40,000 Iowans have had their benefits reduced and denied in the last 2 years,” adds Hubbell. “Healthcare providers across our state have been closed because the managed care organizations aren’t paying them properly. And the cost for managed care are rising much faster than they were before Medicaid privatization. So it’s not working. We need to put the state back in control.”

“I will no longer continue to travel the state and hear from providers that they’re not getting paid for the services that they’ve made,” adds Reynolds. “We put financial penalties into the negotiations to assure that our providers are getting paid for the services that they’re providing vulnerable Iowans.”

“If we work together, we can address the challenges facing our state, so the state government is just as good and as decent as our people,” said Hubbell.

“Iowa is moving in the right direction and the facts are undeniable,” said Reynolds. “We’ve been recognized as the number one state in the country.”

Both candidates hoping to get the public’s vote on November 6.
