SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – An August cyber attack on Jones Eye Clinic and its surgery center has impacted several thousand customers personal information.
On August 23, Jones Eye Clinic and Surgery Center discovered their computer network suffered a cyber attack called ransomware, a type of virus that locks up, or encrypts, information and demands a payment made in order to unlock the information.
Those who could be affected include patients who either registered or had services at either location between January 2003 and August 23, 2018.
An investigation discovered the virus was loaded on August 22.
During this time the attackers would have had the ability to access patient information in Jones Eye Clinic and the Surgery Center billing and scheduling software. However, the attack did not impact our electronic medical records.
Information in the software includes a person’s full name, address, date of birth, date of service, and a medical record number.
For some individuals, the information may also include a Social Security number, insurance status, and claims information. The information did not include financial information like bank account or credit card information.
Officials say there is no indication the information has been misused, and letters to all impacted individuals have been sent.
For individuals who have questions or concerns about the incident, a confidential, toll-free hotline is available at 1-877-299-1557.
