Nebraska man causes nearly $14,000 in property damage in Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KUOO) – A Nebraska man faces multiple charges in connection with some crashes Sunday night in Spirit Lake that caused nearly $14,000 in property damage.

Joseph Burmood, of Kennard, Nebraska, was arrested on several charges, including operating while intoxicated, two counts of striking fixtures upon a highway, and failure to maintain control.

Police say around 7:30 p.m. Sunday Burmood was driving northbound on Hill Avenue when his vehicle struck a stop sign and struck the front porch of a home. Police say Burmood then backed up the vehicle before leaving northbound on Hill Avenue.

His vehicle then crossed the center median into the southbound lane before crossing back into the northbound lane and hitting a street light and no parking sign.

Police say he then left the scene, traveling north again on Hill Avenue, crossing into the southbound lane and onto the sidewalk.

He then crossed both lanes at 10th Street and colliding with a retaining wall and hitting a large tree.

The total amount of property damage was put at about $14,000.
