(NBC) – The Food and Drug Administration plans to overhaul the dietary supplement industry for the first time in a quarter of a century.

According to the FDA, roughly three-quarters of Americans take dietary supplements on a daily basis.

The overhaul will include new ways to quickly inform consumers about concerns over an illegal, or even dangerous, ingredient.

The FDA says four in five older Americans take dietary supplements.

The agency also announced that it took action against 17 companies for selling products that illegally claim to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer or diabetes.

But the FDA says there is no scientific proof to back up these claims, and it could discourage consumers from taking FDA approved products.

The FDA is planning to hold a public meeting to discuss the topic this spring.
