SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – The Sioux City City Council is one step closer to updating the city’s solid waste ordinance, which would lead to an increase in fees for garbage collection.

The city council passed the first reading of changes to the solid waste ordinance in Sioux City municipal code.
If the council approves the second and third readings of the ordinance, waste collection fees will increase by two percent and the city will discontinue the discount for senior citizens.
These changes are tied to the final year of a three-year contract the city has with Gill Hauling.
The council also passed a resolution authorizing the Parks and Recreation Department to apply for a Wellmark Foundation Match Grant.
The $100,000 from the grant would support the Chris Larsen Park Riverfront Redevelopment Project.
