LINCOLN, Nebraska (KTIV) — Ponca’s bid for a third straight state championship came up just short on Friday, losing to Yutan 46-42 in the Class C2 semifinals.
Ponca trailed 25-20 at the half but outscored Yutan 13-5 in the third quarter to take a 33-30 lead. The sixth-seeded Chieftans closed the game with a 16-9 run in fourth quarter to advance to the title game. Carter Kingsbury led Ponca with 15 points.
“Our kids played hard,” said Head Coach Adam Poulosky. “I thought we did pretty good defensively on their guards because they have really good guards and we just didn’t score enough. Missed layups, missed free throws. That’s the difference I thought.”
Ponca falls to 23-5 and will play in the consolation game on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Lincoln Southeast High School.
Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur will play for the Nebraska Class C2 championship after beating fourth-seeded Centennial, 54-25, in the semifinals on Friday at the Devaney Sports Center. BRLD outscored the Broncos 29-7 in the second half.
BR/LD led 17-9 after one quarter and 25-18 at halftime. The Wolverines blew the game wide open by outscoring the Broncos, 12-0, in the third quarter. It was 37-18 after three frames. Lucas Vogt had a game-high 18 points.
The top-seeded Wolverines take a 26-1 record into the title game against Yutan at 4:30 on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
