UPDATE: Over 1,000 Norfolk residents displaced due to flooding

UPDATE:

NORFOLK, Nebraska (KTIV) – Over 1,000 people are displaced from their homes Thursday night in Norfolk following flooding, this according to officials.

During a press conference Thursday afternoon, mayor Josh Moenning said water levels in the area are steady and stable and that the levee is holding.

Moenning said the biggest need for the area right now are air mattresses for the shelters housing those people displaced

Moenning said there is a planned power outage for residents of Norfolk south of Prospect for two hours beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Officials say while the area is not out of the woods yet, conditions are not worsening.

They said residents in these areas are strongly encouraged to seek higher ground.

Officials said it is vital that you do not drive through standing water.

There are closures at north of First Street is at Eisenhower and the Omaha Avenue/Highway 275/24 intersection.

Evacuation routes are on Benjamin Avenue and Norfolk Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to shelter in place unless in the affected area.

Currently, the Levee system is functioning properly but is quickly rising and conditions are worsening.

-Lutheran High Northeast (Norfolk)

-Bel Air Elementary School (Norfolk)

-Norfolk Catholic High School (Norfolk)

-Madison City Auditorium

-Tilden Fire Hall

-Battle Creek Fire Hall

-Newman Grove Fire Hall

-Meadow Grove Fire Hall

Officials said to please bring your own sleeping materials and needed personal items, such as medications.
