Marcus, IA man charged following brief standoff

A Marcus, Iowa, man is charged with disorderly conduct following a brief standoff with officers from several agencies.

Shortly before 7:00pm, Friday night, Cherokee County deputies, and Marcus Police responded to a report of “shots fired” at a home in the 600 block on East Spruce in Marcus.

The Iowa State Patrol, Plymouth County deputies, Sioux County deputies and Cherokee Police also responded to assist.

When authorities arrived, they determined the incident happened inside the home of Richard Nelson. Officers set a perimeter, and made contact with Nelson by telephone. Nelson refused to come out, so the Combined Emergency Response Team (CERT) was deployed. Eventually they negotiated Nelson’s surrender.

Investigators found no gunshot victims inside the home, and took Nelson to the Cherokee County Jail.
