(KTIV) – Hundreds of fish have been found dead on Ingham Lake, in Emmet County, Iowa.
According to the Estherville News, hundreds of carp and crappie were washed to the shore of the lake.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says, “fish kills have become a focus of public attention.”
More than four feet of snow and ice kept sunlight from reaching plants, which produce the oxygen for the lake.
The Iowa DNR says lake kills like this one happen even when plants are producing oxygen.
Long-term residents of Estherville say it happens once every five to 10 years.
