UPDATE: Intruder who died in 24th Street shooting identified

UPDATE:

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Authorities have now identified the person who died following a shooting and home invasion Tuesday morning in Sioux City.

Sioux City Police have identified the intruder as 19-year-old Jose Montanez, Sioux City.

Police say they were called to 1215 25th Street shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday in reference to a disturbance.

Police say Montanez was breaking items in his residence, before breaking out a second story window and jumping through the window.

At 8:30 a.m., police were called to 1321 24th Street for a call of shots fired. Police say Montanez forcefully entered the home.

Police say Montanez was confronted by the homeowner, 29-year-old Travis Gutierrez. Police say Montanez refused to leave and began to assault Gutierrez.

Police say Gutierrez shot Montanez.

Montanez would later die of his injuries at a Sioux City hospital.

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sioux City Police say a man has died following a shooting after a home break-in Tuesday morning.

During a news conference on Tuesday, police say the individual passed away at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

At 8:17 a.m., Sioux City Police was called to 1216 25th Street for a disturbance. Det. John Sanders said a man broke out a window on the second floor of the home before jumping off the porch of the home.

Thirteen minutes later, police were called to 1321 24th Street for a call of shots fired. Police say according to the homeowner, a person had broken into his home and was breaking things in the kitchen.

Sanders said the man who broke into the home on 24th Street began to assault the homeowner.

Police say the homeowner was then assaulted.

That’s when police say the homeowner grabbed his own gun and shot the man that broke into that home.

They say that man did die at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center shortly after 11 this morning.

“At this time there is no evidence that these individuals knew each other or had any association. We do not know the motive for the burglary or the assault at this time,” said Sanders.

Police say no arrests have been made.

They say this is very much still under investigation.

They say they will hand the case over the county attorney once it’s complete.

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sioux City Police say one has been taken to the hospital in critical condition while two people are being questioned following a shooting Tuesday morning.

Sioux City Police responded to the 1300 block of 24th Street around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two people inside the home have been taken to the Sioux City Police station for questioning.

They say no one has been arrested at this time but, they are still working to gather information on what actually happened.

Police say they don’t know how many shots were fired and they say they do not know if there’s a relationship between the man who was shot and the other people inside the home.

Due to rain coming into the area, police say they are trying to preserve as much evidence as they can.

They say police have been out speaking with neighbors trying to gather as much information as they can.

“The last thing I want to do is speculate and give wrong information or we find out it’s not accurate and just be wrong about it. So let these guys do what they do and gather that evidence and gather the information and we will put it together and we will put it together as quickly as we can,” said Lt. Chris Groves, Sioux City Police Department.

Sioux City Police will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. at the police department regarding the shooting.
