SIOUX CITY (KTIV) –  A teacher at Irving Elementary is the Sioux City Community School District’s Teacher of the Year for 2020.

Irving Elementary students and staff Monday celebrated the honor for dual language teacher Luis Lemus.

An 11-year veteran of the school district, Lemus connects with students on a personal level.

He came to the United States as a young boy, speaking very little English.

He says he was very surprised but honored to hear someone noticed his hard work.

“I was very surprised when I heard that I was selected to be the district teacher of the year. It just verified everything that I have worked for, that somebody is noticing all of the work that I am doing in the classroom, noticing that I am working hard, so it means a lot to me,” said Lemus.

Lemus will move onto the state level, where he will be considered for the Iowa Teacher of the Year Award.
