SIOUX CITY (KTIV) — The Morningside softball team clinched a spot in the NAIA tournament by winning the GPAC tournament last weekend. A total of 40 teams will play at ten opening round sites around the country. Morningside now knows which four-team site they are heading to.
The third-seeded Mustangs are going to the Oklahoma City bracket, where they’ll play Olivet Nazarene of Illinois in game one. The Lady Tigers were the Chicago-land regular season champs. On the other side of the bracket is top-seeded Oklahoma City, who is 54-6.
The winner of that bracket will be one of ten teams that go to the NAIA World Series in Springfield, Missouri, starting May 23.
Morningside has a 30-9 record after winning the conference tournament. It’s the third time in the last four seasons that the Mustangs have won at least 30 games.
This is the ninth appearance in the NAIA tournament in the last 15 years for head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann. She is Morningside’s all-time winningest coach in any sport, with over 700 victories.
