SIOUX CITY (KTIV) — We’re just a week away from the season opener for the Explorers on May 16. Seven of the nine guys who will be in the batting order were here last season. That’s for a team that had the best record in the league at 71-29.

Leading the way is last year’s American Association Player of the Year, Jose Sermo. He led the league with 81 RBI’s and was second with 22 homers. In 87 games, Sermo hit .316 with 100 hits.

Shortstop Nate Samson was a finalist for player of the year, after winning that award in 2016. He set a team record with 141 hits last year and his .340 average was second best in the league.

“We return most of our offense that led the league last year in runs scored and battling average,” said manager Steve Montgomery. “We have a few young pieces that we want to see and see how they work out in spring training.”

The X’s also mix in outfielder Michael Lang, the X’s all-time hits leader, and that’s a tough lineup.

“I keep coming back because I know we keep putting together good teams,” said Lang. “We just happen to fall short and I want to be part of that first team that wins that championship in Sioux City.”

Sioux City’s exhibition game against Sioux Falls, scheduled in Vermillion on Thursday has been cancelled because of the rain. The two teams will meet on Saturday in Moville at 5:00, with a youth clinic at 2:30.
