SSC police officer stable after shooting, name released

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (KTIV) –  A South Sioux City police officer that was involved in a shooting early this morning, is now in stable condition.

Dakota County Attorney, Kim Watson, says that Officer Brian Van Berkum made it through surgery, and is in stable condition and doing very well.

Shortly after 2 am, Police were called to Los Amigos in South Sioux City with reports of a man holding a gun.

After arriving on the scene officer Van Berkum confronted the man with the alleged weapon.

Officials say the two exchanged gunfire following the confrontation.

Officer Van Berkum and the suspect were both taken to a nearby hospital with sustained injuries.

Following this incident, the Nebraska State Patrol has taken the lead in this ongoing investigation.

“The NSP investigators are just investigating the scene of whatever occurred and they’ll keep processing the scene until they are done. They’ll begin the investigation and we will put out any information as they deem fit,” says Ed Mahon, South Sioux City Chief of Police
