UPDATE: SSC officer injured in the line of duty expected to return home Thursday

UPDATE:

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Nebraska (KTIV) – The South Sioux City Police officer shot in the line of duty, last Saturday, is expected to return home on Thursday.

South Sioux City Police Chief Ed Mahon says Officer Brian Van Berkum is expected to get out of the hospital sometime Thursday.

He will be escorted home by the South Sioux City Police Department.

People are encouraged to gather on Dakota Avenue from the river to 39th street to show your support between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Mahon says Van Berkum has been improving with each passing day… even walking around his hospital room.

On Saturday, Van Berkum was shot in the leg and abdomen outside of a bar in South Sioux City.

Mahon says there continues to be an outpouring of support for Van Berkum as he recovers.

South Sioux City Police Chief Ed Mahon said Officer Brian Van Berkum is expected to get out of the hospital within the next few days.

Mahon says Van Berkum has been walking around.

He also says he’s getting better and better each day.

On Saturday, Van Berkum was injured in the line of duty, after being shot in the leg and abdomen outside of a bar in South Sioux City.

Mahon says there continues to be an outpouring of support for Officer Van Berkum.
