PENDER, Nebraska (KTIV)- Kurtis Kaser, a 63-year-old Nebraska farmer, is recovering after cutting off his own leg with a pocket knife.

Nearly one month ago, Kaser was unloading corn when he got out of his truck and accidentally stepped on the grain hopper opening.

His leg got caught in an auger in the hopper, and he was unable to pull it out.

With nobody around to help and no cellphone on hand, Kaser went into survival mode.

He pulled out his pocket knife, cut enough of his leg to get loose, and then crawled to the nearest phone.

“I kept pulling and pulling to see if I could get out and it wouldn’t let me go, and it was wrapped around something and where I don’t know for sure, but when I went I just kept thinking about how long I was going to stay conscious and stuff, and I didn’t know what to do it just kept pulling and I was holding and I was getting my arms were getting weak,” said Kurtis Kaser, Nebraska Farmer.

Kaser says he knows things will be different from here on out, but is coping with the help of not only his family but also people from all over the country.

After his injuries heal, he plans on getting a prosthetic leg.
