(NBC News) – A record number of Americans are expected to hit the roads this Memorial Day.
Triple-A says nearly 43 million people will kick off the summer with a Memorial Day weekend getaway.
The vast majority of those holiday travelers – nearly 38 million – will drive to their destinations, despite rising gas prices.
That’s about 3.5 percent more than last year and the most on record for the holiday.
Experts say motorists could experience delays up to three times longer than normal evening commutes.
Drivers in the most congested metro areas should anticipate delays starting as early as Wednesday and continuing through Memorial Day.
Triple-A advises drivers to avoid the morning and evening commute times if possible or plan alternate routes.
