Officer Van Berkum thanks community for support; looks forward to future

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Nebraska (KTIV) –  A South Sioux City Police Officer injured in the line of duty nearly a week and a half ago is home and recovering.

“It could always be worse,” says Officer Brian Van Berkum.

Van Berkum has been out of the hospital for nearly five days now.

He was shot twice in the line of duty back on May 11, outside of a bar in South Sioux City.

Van Berkum says he’s thankful.

“I’m always happy for what I have. If I was going to be upset and angry about something then why? It could always be worse,” said Van Berkum.

Last Thursday, Van Berkum was welcomed home by the South Sioux City comunity along with fellow first responders.

He says that’s something he’s very grateful for.

“I really couldn’t even put into words, just overwhelmed,” he said. “It made me just so happy. It made me realize that people really do care about everybody or that people really do care about people soon.”

Next for Van Berkum?

Plenty of rest to heal from his injuries.

“So, I’ve heard six weeks before, I really think I’ll be recovered somewhat, I guess everything kind of play it by ear,” said Van Berkum.

Van Berkum says he already has work on his mind.

“Oh yeah, yep, I will get back to work. It just depends on when,” said Van Berkum.

Van Berkum says he’s incredibly thankful for all the people who have stopped to wish him well, sent him cards and visited him.

He says it all means so much to him.
