The girls state soccer tournament starts Thursday in Des Moines for Bishop Heelan and Spencer. Both teams have been dominant this season.
At 19-1, Spencer has the most wins in the state. The Tigers also lead the state in goals with 118, while giving up just five goals all season.
The Crusaders have given up just 12 goals in 17 games. Heelan takes a nine-game winning streak to state and have given up just one goal in that stretch.
Senior defenders Brooklin Froehlich and Dayle Bleeker stop most attacks before they start.
“I think those two are outstanding and should be all-state for the whole year,” said Heelan head coach Clark Charlestin. “I think they were a little disappointed they didn’t get on there and I think they showed you why we kept nine clean sheets so far this season. It’s because of those two girls mainly.”
Bishop Heelan plays North Polk at 11:30 in Class 1A. Spencer faces Cedar Rapids Xavier at 1:45 in 2A.
