Update: 

SIOUX CITY (KTIV)- A Sioux City man charged in the death of a man following an assault on 4th Street last year is now in Woodbury County.

According to the Woodbury County In-Jail Roster, Avila was booked into Woodbury County jail just after 7 a.m. Saturday.

Avila is charged with involuntary manslaughter, and assault causing serious injury in the death of 31-year-old Peter Johnson.

Each charge carries a possible five years in jail.

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A Sioux City man charged in the death of a man following an assault on 4th Street last year has been arrested.

Twenty-four-year-old Ray Avila was arrested Monday night in Mexico by U.S. Marshals, this according to the Sioux City Police Department.

Avila is charged with involuntary manslaughter, and assault causing serious injury in the death of 31-year-old Peter Johnson. Each charge carries a possible five years in jail.

Investigators say Avila attacked Johnson on July 29, 2018, in Sioux City’s lower 4th Street district.

Johnson was transported to a Sioux City hospital, where he later died.

According to the Sioux City Police Department,  U.S. Marshals determined Avila fled to Mexico via bus in the days following the assault.

U.S. Marshals narrowed their search to a small town in Jalisco, Mexico, where Avila had fled.

An investigation by the U.S Marshal’s Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force, with the assistance of the Sioux City Police Department, South Sioux City Police Department and various tips from the community resulted in his arrest.
