(NBC News) – Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta spoke Wednesday on the handling of a sex trafficking case in 2008 involving billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Acosta was a federal prosecutor in south Florida in 2008 when he was involved in a plea deal with Epstein, allowing the financier to avoid prosecution on federal charges of molesting teenage girls.

On Monday federal prosecutors in New York filed similar charges against Epstein. Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the new charges.
