SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A West High School student is headed to San Francisco, Calif., next week to represent his home state.

West High School student Javier Fuentes was chosen to attend a Youth Leadership Summit in San Francisco July 14-17.

Fuentes is one of only four students in Iowa selected to attend and had to go through a rigorous interview process to be selected.

After his first interview, Fuentes was called back a second time and expected to have to interview again.

“They asked me if I liked San Fransico and if I liked the hot weather and I said ‘Yeah,’ and they were like ‘Alright, great, you’re going to San Francisco.’ I was completely in shock. I had no clue whether I’d be picked or not,” said Fuentes.

He will become the president of the West High School student council this school year.

He hopes the summit will help him prepare for the role.
