Hawkeyes expected to challenge for Big Ten West title

CHICAGO (KTIV) — Most Big Ten polls have either Iowa or Nebraska winning the Big Ten West. The Hawkeyes, who are in Chicago for the Big Ten Media Days, went 9-4 last season, and 5-4 in conference play.

Iowa has experience where it counts. Head coach Kirk Ferentz is the dean of Big Ten coaches, entering his 21st season. Nate Stanley is back for his third year as the starting quarterback. He threw for over 2,800 yards last season with 26 toucdown passes.

The defense was seventh in the nation in points allowed, but seven starters are gone. Iowa has the pieces in place to be a contender.

“We have a chance to have an opportunity,” said Ferentz. “That’s the first thing you have to do is put yourself in position to be competitive. Once you get to that spot then it’s a matter of just handling all the little things well.”

Iowa opens the season against Miami of Ohio on August 31.
