Rev. Lorna Halaas speaks to KTIV about new role as Bishop of Western Iowa Synod

(KTIV) – The first female Bishop of the Western Iowa Synod will be installed this weekend at First Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Rev. Lorna Halaas recently was elected to a six-year term as Bishop, becoming the first woman named to the position in the Western Iowa Synod’s 31-year-history.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, and a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary, St. Paul, both in Minnesota.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the U. S., with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Bishop Halaas succeeds The Rev. Rodger Prois, who served as Bishop since 2013.
