SIOUX CITY (KTIV) — Morningside College is celebrating its 125th birthday this year. The Mustang football team is doing their part to make it a special year. Morningside is ranked number-1 in the NAIA poll as they prepare for their homecoming game against Midland.
The Mustangs rank first nationally in seven different team categories, including points per game, first downs and total offense. The offensive line still hasn’t allowed a sack through two games and they’re converting on 61 percent of their third down tries.
Morningside has won 35 straight regular season games and 17 games in a row overall. They haven’t missed a beat as they try to defend their national title.
“Coach Ryan emphasizes every day just dominating the day, just taking it one day at a time,” said senior defensive back Deion Clayborne. “Not much has changed from last season. We always have the mindset that we’re on the top and people are coming for us. We’re just working one practice at a time, just dominating the day and getting after it.”
“There’s a lot of confidence but last year’s in the past with this team,” said sophomore quarterback Joe Dolincheck. “We’re looking to take each game week by week no matter what’s happening, not looking forward to any game, just the week we’re on.”
Midland is 1-1 and is receiving votes in the NAIA poll. That’s a 1:30 kickoff Saturday at Olsen Stadium.
