Western Christian and Gehlen Catholic qualified for the Iowa high school state volleyball tournament with regional final wins on Tuesday.
Top-ranked Western Christian beat Boyden-Hull, 3-0, to move into the Class 2A state tournament. The Wolfpack (38-5) are the defending champs in 2A and earned the top seed at state. They’ll play 2:00 pm, Wednesday October 13, against eighth-seeded Hudson (31-7).
Gehlen Catholic beat Newell-Fonda, 3-2, to move into the Class 1A state tournament. The Jays trailed two sets to one, before winning the last two sets, including a 15-7 victory in set five. Gehlen goes to state for the eleventh time in the last twelve years.
“I’ve been telling them all year about how you really got to be able to dig deep at times,” said Gehlen head coach Mike Meyer. “I even said before the game, expect a tough match because the tougher the battle, the sweeter the victory and you can see how sweet it is. I couldn’t be more proud of a group of kids.”
Gehlen (25-7) gets the 4-seed and will play fifth-seeded North Tama (26-6) Wednesday, October 13, at 8:00 pm in Cedar Rapids.
