SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Friday is “National First-Generation College Student Day”.

First-generation students are those who are the first in their family to attend college.

Staff at Briar Cliff University say first-gen students can sometimes face financial challenges.

BCU has a program called “TRIO Student Support Services”.

It’s a federally-funded program that helps first-gen students.

Leah Perry, a senior at Briar Cliff, is just one of nearly 140 recipients of the TRIO grant.

Perry says she is the first of seven siblings to attend college.

“It’s really important to me like that’s probably the fun fact about me that I always tell everybody because I’m so proud that I get to be the first in my family to go to college,” said Leah Perry, First-Generation Student.

Perry graduates in the spring with a major in kinesiology and human performance.

After she graduates she plans on going to PA school and be an Orthapedic Physician Assistant.
