STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) – The Storm Lake Post Office is temporarily suspending service Post Office Box and Retail Services due to a vehicle running into the building on Sunday evening.
According to a press release by the Storm Lake Post Office, the United States Postal Service is awaiting a structural engineer assessment of the facility to ensure the safety of customers and employees.
Once the building is declared safe, an update on reopening or relocating services will follow.
Post Office officials say retail services are available at the Truesdale Post Office located at 120 Main Street in Truesdale, Iowa.
Retail hours at the High Bridge facility are 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Retail services are also available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays and weekends, at usps.com.
The Storm Lake Police Department says the accident that caused the damage to the post office occurred on November 10 just before 7:30 p.m.
When police arrived on the scene they found that a vehicle had driven through the front glass doors at the post office. An investigation determined that the driver accidentally stepped on the vehicle accelerator instead of the brake.
No injuries were reported.
Police say the post office building sustained in excess of about $10,000 in damage and the vehicle sustained about $6,000 in damage.
