YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) — Mount Marty College plans to construct a new residence hall on its Yankton, South Dakota, campus.
MMC officials announced the $4.5 million project on Monday. They say the 96-bed residence hall will be for third and fourth-year students.
The three-story, 20,000 square-foot building is scheduled to be completed by August 2020.
The building will be located southeast of the Ruth Donohoe First Dakota Fieldhouse, which is currently under construction.
College officials say the new residence will provide a close-knit transitional community for students as they finish the last two years of their college careers.
“In keeping with our Benedictine focus on the importance of community, this new home for MMC juniors and seniors allows for additional leadership opportunities for those students,” said Mount Marty College President Marc Long. “Students will be encouraged to take leadership positions to discuss concerns and ideas for their living community and create policies with reasonable boundaries for that community.”
Mount Marty currently has three on-campus living spaces; Corbey Hall, Whitbey Hall and the fourth floor of Bede Hall. All together the campus has a capacity of 349 beds.
With the college expecting enrollment to grow, officials say they need 50 to 60 additional units by the fall of 2020.
