SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -- Sioux City East has made three straight appearances at the boys state basketball tournament. After just one week of this season the Black Raiders are one of just 11 Class 4A teams to sit at 2-0. East beat Spencer in their opener by 14 points and then won at Bishop Heelan by 11.
The Black Raiders have three players scoring in double figures. Jaleque Dunson had 38 points in the opener and is averaging 24 per game, followed by Sayvion Armstrong and Danny Callahan. All three of those players are seniors, who know what it takes to be successful.
"The guys this year can score the ball," said head coach Ras Vanderloo. "Jaleque has stepped it up a notch. Sayvion has been really good, Callahan is the glue to our team so we got some guys in there. Maxey on the inside and we got some good young guys were throwing in there but like I said, when you got that many knew guys coming along, it just takes a little time. We're moving forward obviously but baby steps."
"All of the seniors have been playing together," said senior Jaleque Dunson. "It's been a long time that we've been playing together so we all work good and if one person is not going, you gotta watch out for the next."
East will host Council Bluffs T.J. Tuesday and West on Friday.
