UNION COUNTY (KTIV) -- Driving in the winter can be challenging, especially when there's a mixture of snow, freezing drizzle, and high winds.
The conditions weren't much better in Union County, South Dakota, this Friday.
Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges gave some simple safety tips that can help decrease the amount of accidents.
Sheriff Limoges said the most important thing to remember is to drive according to the road conditions, and not the speed limit.
He said making certain your tires are properly inflated and in good shape can help add traction, and make it easier to maneuver in slippery roads.
Another important thing is slowing down when coming to a stop.
This can prevent your vehicle from sliding, and hitting another vehicle.
"The closing distance between vehicles needs to be further, they need to be further apart because they don't have the stopping ability because of the slick roads, and the snow piling up, so slow down and stay off your phones," said Limoges.
Sheriff Limoges said they are hoping they can get by without any major accidents during this winter storm.
