SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Four residents at The Heritage at Northern Hills Retirement Community received a special gift for Valentine's Day.

The Friends of the Animal Shelter donated life-like robotic pets to residents who are not able to care for an actual pet.

FOTAS works closely with Sioux City Animal Adoption & Rescue Center. Their goal is to obtain any necessary medical attention that may be required prior to adoption.

The Executive Director at The Heritage says they identified the residents who would benefit the most from these pets.

"I sit and I watch the residents actually participate with these animals. And it is as though they are real animals. The resident sees it as a real animal, and I see what it does for them." said Christy Nikkel, Executive Director at The Heritage at Northern Hills.

Nikkel also says that they are very thankful FOTAS thought of their residents on Valentine's Day and that this will have a lasting impact on everyone involved.

"We thought, 'what a perfect opportunity', especially on Valentine's Day. A wonderful time to make someone else happy. So we are very happy to present these new pets to the local residents." said Cindy Rarrat, F.O.T.A.S.

Representatives from FOTAS say they hope to donate more of these life-like animals to other residents in retirement communities.
