UPDATE: Authorities identify victim killed in barn collapse


REMBRANDT, Iowa (KTIV) -- Authorities have identified the victim killed in a barn collapse on Friday in Rembrandt, Iowa.

Authorities have identified the victim as Humberto Jesus Lopez of Worthington, Minnesota.


REMBRANDT, Iowa (KTIV)- One person is dead after a barn collapsed in Rembrandt, Iowa.

Officials with the Buena Vista Co EMA say that on Friday, February 14 at approximately 6:30 am a 911 call was received by the Buena Vista County Communications Center for a response at Rembrandt Foods.

Upon learning that one employee was verified to be in the barn at the time of the collapse, rescue operations began.

After searching the barn for nearly 12 hours, officials say they had to stop the search due to significant concerns for responder safety.

The following day, February 15, the search resumed and a victim’s body was recovered.

Officials say a structural failure had resulted in a catastrophic collapse of equipment within a barn.

Further assistance in the search for the missing employee was requested from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The Sioux City component of Iowa Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue was activated and deployed to the scene.
