Freedom Park hosts 4th of July events in preparation for holiday

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) - Siouxland Freedom Park in South Sioux City is hosing 4th of July events this week in anticipation for the celebration of our nation's independence.

Starting Thursday, July 2nd, Siouxlanders can come out to the park for a special renaming dedication of a Nebraska highway.

The highway will be re-named for Nebraska's greatest heroes.

"We have the designation as the Nebraska Medal of Honor highway. Which is Highway 20, but the governor of has re-named the highway, the Nebraska Medal of Honor Highway. And, it starts at Freedom Park," said Melissa Lanzourakis, Siouxland Freedom Park volunteer.

Siouxland Freedom Park will be hosting a drive-in movie in South Sioux City on July 2nd, as well.

Gates will open at 8:00 p.m. for the showing of the classic movie 'The Sandlot.'

"And it is a fundraiser for Siouxland Freedom Park. So, we are asking for a donation of $20 per vehicle. And you can put as many people as you can get into your vehicle. We will ask people to stay in or on your vehicle because of COVID," said Lanzourakis.

Lanzourakis adds volunteers will be wearing face masks as well.
Other events for the week include the 10th Annual and Final Remembrance Run/Walk and silent auction and a firework show beginning at 11:59 p.m. on July 3rd to kick off the holiday right.
