(NBC) -- After a long wait, Major League Baseball returned to the diamond Thursday night.
The defending world champion Washington Nationals hosted the New York Yankees for the season opener.
Players and coaches from both teams started the game out by taking a knee and stretching a black cloth across the players to make a stand against police brutality. All players then stood up for the National Anthem.
The Yankees won the rain-shortened game 4 to 1.
On the west coast, the LA Dodgers took on the San Francisco Giants. Both teams took a knee as well to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
The Dodgers came out on top with the score of 8 to 1.
