IOWA CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- Expectations are sky-high for the Hawkeye basketball team. Iowa has almost everyone back from last year's 20-11 team.
The Hawks got a big boost when Luka Garza decided to return for his senior season. Garza was named the National Player of the Year by six different media outlets. The 6'11" center was the Big Ten Player of the Year, averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Four other starters are back, and Jordan Bohannon and Jack Nunge are back from injuries. The Hawks will likely be in the top ten preseason rankings.
"We've got a veteran club which is always something that I think, especially in this league, is so critical," said head coach Fran McCaffery. "We have a lot of different players who can score. We have a lot of different players who bring a complete skill set so we can mesh."
"I'm really excited to get this season rolling," said Garza. "This team is looking really good. We've been working out. We're excited to get started on some practices. We've got a lot of depth, we've got a lot of skill. We're just trying to put it all together."
Big Ten schedules aren't finalized, but Iowa will play 27 games in the regular season.
