Iowa leaders reflect on the importance and meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Iowa (KWWL) — Across the state of Iowa, leaders are reflecting on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

NOTE: This list will be updated throughout the day.

“Today, we remember that although we have come so far in our pursuit of a more equal and just nation, Dr. King’s example must inspire our continued progress. I’ve been reflecting as we head into this historic week how Dr. King would be so proud to see Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris – a Howard graduate – and Senator-Elect Raphael Warnock – a Morehouse graduate and pastor from Dr. King’s own Church – make history and usher in a new era of peace and justice.

As Democrats, we carry on Dr. King’s memory in our fight for a more equitable criminal justice system, fairer wages, accessible health care, and the promise of the American dream fulfilled for all of us. Remember that today is a day on, not a day off. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us to navigate through the challenges of COVID-19 and heal the cracks it has laid bare in our society.

On this holiday, Iowa Democrats are partnering with the Food Bank of Iowa to help our fellow Iowans put food on the table. I urge Iowans across our state to reflect on how to combat the injustices they see in their lives, and how they can best carry Dr. King’s legacy forward. In two days, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will begin to lead our nation on the path to civil justice, equality, and progress for future generations.”

Iowa Democratic Party Vice Chair June Owens

“Today, we honor the incredible life and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King awoken (sic) the conscience of America to stand against racial injustice and gave voice to those who had long been denied the promises of America simply because of the color of their skin.

He did so through peaceful protests and eloquent words that spoke to the very soul of America, reminding us who we are and who we must continue to strive to become.

Like the sound of freedom ringing from every mountainside, Dr. King’s words continue to echo through history growing louder each day.

With fresh wounds from injustice, we need no further reminders as to why our shared destiny as a nation and the preservation of freedom for all is entirely dependent upon fulfilling Dr. King’s dream.

Let’s join together and honor Dr. King’s life and mission of achieving equality and justice for all.”

Senator Joni Ernst (R)
