SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Briar Cliff University in Sioux City hosted a new event on Friday, called "Freeze Fest," to welcome back students to campus.
Freeze Fest was filled with COVID-19 safe, on-campus activities for all students and staff.
Organizers said activities included sled building, snowball dodgeball, life-size hungry hippos, and cornhole. They also had a hot chocolate bar, root beer keg, a fire pit for s'mores, and a winter-themed meal.
Organizers said they wanted to put on a meaningful event since the pandemic has changed so much of their regular school activities.
"We knew that the students were going to be gone for a long period of time. And we thought let's do something where they can come back and be excited," said Maria Slaughter, Director of Strategic Initiatives. "A lot of our social activities in the fall were canceled due to COVID, so we were trying to find something we could do in a safe way."
Organizers said they were happy with the turnout. They said it is clear the students have been missing the social interaction that recently decreased, due to the pandemic.
