SIOUX CITY (Courtesy Musketeers) - The Sioux City Musketeers avenged a 4-3 defeat at Sioux Falls earlier in the weekend, skating past the Stampede 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the Tyson Events Center.
Brian Carrabes opened the scoring with 3:25 left in the first period, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and converting on a breakaway chance. But Sioux Falls’ Luke Toporowski answered with a goal of his own just over a minute later and the two rivals went to intermission all knotted up.
The tie looked as if it might carry over into the next intermission as well but Matteo Costantini tapped a slapshot past Stampede netminder Noah Grannan with 35 seconds left in the period.
The Musketeers built a 3-1 lead early in the third frame, killing off a Sioux Falls power play before Christian Jimenez found the back of the net on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Garrett Pinoniemi scored with 5:55 left in regulation to bring the Stampede within one goal before Brenden Olson put the game away, scoring with an empty-net in the final minute.
Alex Tracy finished with 18 saves for the Musketeers, who improve to 14-15-1 overall. Sioux City returns to action Friday and Saturday night in Fargo.
