Murder trial begins Tuesday for man accused of killing ex-wife’s landlord

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The trial for a man accused of killing his ex-wife's landlord is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Sioux City.

Forty-five-year-old Gary Dains, Junior faces multiple counts, including first-degree murder, in the death of Paul Smith.

On July 16, 2019, Sioux City police were called to a residence in the 300 block of 20th Street for a welfare check on Smith. Dains was seen earlier driving Smith's Ford Explorer in the 1900 block of Grandview Boulevard.

When police entered Smith's kitchen, they found him dead. According to the complaint, an autopsy revealed Smith died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck, with a probable component of strangulation.
