VERMILLION, S.D. (KTIV) - A small fire forced the evacuation of a dorm on the University of South Dakota campus Friday afternoon.

Vermillion city officials say, shortly before 4:00 p.m., fire crews responded to a fire alarm, inside Norton Residence Hall, on North Pine Street.

Crews found an active fire burning on the first floor of the dorm. A full evacuation was already underway.

Still, rescue crews searched every room on every floor to make sure that everyone had gotten out safely. The fire was confined to a single room.

Investigators say sprinklers slowed the spread of the fire until it was fully extinguished by fire crews.
The person living in the affected room is in temporary housing and wasn't hurt. All other residents were able to return to their rooms.

The cause of the fire hasn't been found.
