Newell-Fonda beat Montezuma, 73-34, on Friday to move into the 1A championship game.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Second-seeded Newell-Fonda moved into the girls Class 1A state championsip game with a 73-34 win over sixth-seeded Montezuma on Friday.

Bailey Sievers had 15 points, Macy Sievers added 12 points and Maggie Walker had 11 as Newell-Fonda improved to 25-1. Newell-Fonda led 28-10 after a quarter and 42-20 at halftime. The Mustangs are the only Class 1A team with over 2,000 points this season.

The Mustangs, who have won the last two Class 1A championships, will meet top-seeded Bishop Garrigan (25-1) in the finals at 6:30 on Saturday. Newell-Fonda made a shot at the buzzer last season to beat the Bears, 65-63, in the title game.

"Is this the matchup that we were hoping to get? Absolutely," said head coach Dick Jungers. "Secondly, both teams found their way back to the game so looking forward to that opportunity."

"This is the situation that we want to be in," said senior Maggie Walker. "We're both pretty good teams so it's just going to be a game of plays and we just got to play Mustang basketball and just do what we normally do."

The Mustangs only loss this season was to the Bears, 66-45, in the fifth game of the season.
