Newell-Fonda girls beat Garrigan to win third straight 1A championship

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Newell-Fonda avenged their only loss of the season and beat Bishop Garrigan for the Class 1A state championship on Saturday, 66-52. The Mustangs lost to the Bears, 66-45, in the fifth game of the regular season.

This is the third straight 1A championship for Newell-Fonda, who beat Garrigan 65-53 in last season's title game on a shot at the buzzer.

Macy Sievers had 17 points for Newell-Fonda and Bailey Sievers added 14 points. Audi Crooks led Garrigan and all scorers with 25 points. Newell-Fonda made five three-pointers while Garrigan was held to two.

Newell-Fonda led 18-10 after one quarter and 33-20 at halftime. The Mustangs finish 26-1 while Garrigan ends the season at 25-2.
