Unity Christian beats West Lyon for Class 3A girls title

Unity Christian beat West Lyon for the Class 3A state championship.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -- Unity Christian won their third state championship, 48-31, over West Lyon on Saturday. The 3A titles is the school's first since winning back to back titles in 2015 and 2016. West Lyon was in the title game for the first time since 1998.

Unity Christian came into the game with a 24-2 record while West Lyon was 24-1. Brooklyn Meyer had a huge first half for West Lyon. The junior scored 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter. The Knights answer with Janie Schoonhoven. She takes the feed and puts it in. The senior finishes with a game high 17 points and 16 rebounds.

West Lyon closes the half strong. Meyer finds a cutting Hayley Knoblock for the layup. The Wildcats lead 23-18 at the half. The second half belonged to Unity Christian as Tyra Schuiteman goes inside for two of her 12 points. This game went into the fourth quarter tied at 29.

The Knights start the fourth quarter on fire. Gracie Schoonhoven drills the triple. Unity Christian outscores West Lyon 19-2 in the final frame and win the class 3A state championship 48 to 31.

"Pretty special to get here with this group and then to have daughter in there too, that's pretty awesome too," said head coach Jay Schuiteman. "What a magical week we had and these girls just played their hearts out and always make me look good."

"Honestly, it just felt so good know that we had done it," said senior Janie Schoonhoven. "All the hard work during the season and offseason paid off and it's just a huge blessing."

Unity Christian won 14 straight games to close the season.
