SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - As the weather heats up, boats are coming out of storage and into the water.
With more people out, it's important to know how to keep yourself and others safe.
Lt. Josh McClure with Sioux City Fire Rescue says one of the biggest things to know if you are boating on the Missouri River is how dangerous it is.
He says the current is extremely strong. Along with that, he says there are a lot of hidden objects that boats can strike, causing people to be thrown out into the water.
He says you should get to know the river itself and how to operate it, and always wear a life jacket, no matter your age.
"We have done several body recoveries the last few years I don't know of any documented instance of somebody dying in the Missouri River with a life jacket on in this area," said McClure.
McClure adds drinking and boating is never a good idea. There are boating under the influence laws enforced in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
